KING TIDES

In Auckland, when large high tides or ‘king tides’ occur, only a small-to-moderate storm surge is required to flood some areas, and that could be caused simply by strong winds and ocean swell. For more information on King Tides, visit King Tides Auckland.

Here are some tips to help you prepare if you think coastal inundation or king tides may affect you:

  • Check our hazard viewer to see whether your property is at risk of coastal inundation.
  • If time permits, move valuable household possessions out of areas that flood. Raising equipment will prevent damage.
  • In an emergency, use sandbags to divert water away from your home.
  • If your home has been flooded, seek professional advice about how to properly dry it out to prevent mould.
  • Don’t forget: If power sockets or electrical items have come into contact with water, call an electrician before use.
  • Keep insurance policies, documents, and other valuables in a safe deposit or water-tight box. You may need quick, easy access to these documents. Keep them in a safe place less likely to be damaged during a flood.

How ready are you?
